Last Call: Mindfulness Pre-Reunion Event Saturday

Our Host Sam Hopkins Invites You
to a Virtual Presentation by
Charlie Halpern,
On Meditation and Mindfulness

Holding Joys and Sorrows with Equanimity and Grace

Charlie Halpern has been a public interest lawyer, activist, author, educator, and meditation practitioner.  He also served as the founding dean of CUNY School of Law, and as a faculty member of various prominent law schools across the country.

Since 1980, he has had a regular practice of meditation including extended silent retreats as well as teaching meditation to law students, lawyers, and judges.  In 1991 he was the cofounder and board chair of the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society.

His 2008 book, Making Waves and Riding the Currents: Activism and the Practice Of Wisdom, explores using meditation to cultivate inner wisdom, compassion, and equanimity.

Charlie will guide meditations which are suitable for beginners or experienced meditators; he will explore Mindfulness as an important skill to cultivate, particularly in these challenging times with the pandemic, climate disorders, and deep political uncertainty. He will also discuss the relevance of mindfulness for managing distress and uncertainty in the aging process and the death of loved ones.  One 15-minute practice session will focus on Managing Stress.

The program will include reflections on mindfulness by Charlie’s wife Susan, a meditator, social worker, psychotherapist, cancer survivor, and author of The Etiquette of Illness: What to Say When You Can't Find the Words.  Our classmate, Peter Strauss, Charlie’s lifelong friend and a partner in the mindfulness work, will speak about his meditation experiences and his organization of programs for students and faculty at Columbia Law School.

The program will allow time for discussion and for classmates to share their own experiences with meditation and mindfulness.

Saturday, October 10th, from 1 pm to 3 pm Eastern, including a Question and Answer Session
