Reminder: Tim Wirth and John Harte with a Zoom Climate Report Feb. 13, 1-3 pm

Host Sam Hopkins Invites you to hear Classmates Tim Wirth & John Harte
discuss the Science of Climate Change, and policy prospects for the Future:

The Challenges of Climate Change

They have worked together on many issues, Including clean air and acid rain. They shared the podium in a climate discussion at our last Class Reunion, and have joined together on the Ad Hoc Committee for Harvard Divest.  Tim would like you to consider the petition to elect three climate activists to the Harvard Board of Overseers that follows this invitation.

Tim has been working on the climate issue for nearly forty years. In the Senate Tim chaired the landmark Hansen hearing in 1988, and introduced the first comprehensive climate legislation soon thereafter.  He was a lead member of the Senate delegation to the Earth Summit in 1990, and soon thereafter was named Undersecretary of State with responsibilities that included climate issues. He chaired the US delegation for the Kyoto protocol, and was the lead US negotiator until he left the government to help Ted Turner set up the United Nations Foundation.  The foundation played a major role in the lead up to the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015. Tim has helped lead the broad student, faculty and alumni coalition advocating for Harvard to divest from fossil fuels, and as a former Overseer, he is supporting Harvard Forward and the petition candidates for the Board of Overseers.

John Harte is a theoretical physicist turned ecologist.  His research over the past 5 decades on acid rain, climate change, and biodiversity has had a major influence both within the scientific community and on policy and legislation.  He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Leo Szilard prize from the American Physical Society, and is a co-recipient of a 2006 George Polk award in investigative journalism. He is an elected Fellow of the California Academy of Sciences, the American Physical Society, the Ecological society of America, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.  He has also served on six National Academy of Sciences Committees and has authored over 250 scientific publications, including eight books, one of which, "Consider a Spherical Cow" is a widely used textbook on environmental modeling.

Dear Harvard Alumni Friends,

You will remember reading about the Harvard Forward campaign last year – the New York Times wrote about it when the Harvard Forward campaign helped elect three climate activists to the Harvard Board of Overseers via petition. Harvard Forward is focussed in particular on pushing for greater climate action from Harvard, including fossil fuel divestment.

TheHarvard Board of Overseers consists of 30 alumni who are elected by their fellow alumni to help set Harvard’s plans and priorities. This year, Harvard Forward is supporting the petition candidacy of three candidates inthis spring’s election for the Board of Overseers:

Dr. Yvette Efevbera, Megan Red Shirt-Shaw, and Natalie Unterstell. They will bring their backgrounds in public health, higher education, and climate policy to the Board to make Harvard a more just and inclusive institution. You can learn more about the candidates here.

However, before they can stand for election this spring, petition candidates must gather 2,987 alumni signatures by February 1st in order to qualify for the ballot. The Harvard Forward campaign is a little more than halfway there; they need to collect 1,300 more signatures in the next 3 weeks.

I am writing to encourage you to nominate the 3 outstanding Harvard Forward candidates to the Harvard Board of Overseers ballot. You can sign online, no printing required. The process is big and cumbersome, and will take a few minutes (insurgent campaigns are never easy).

Please join me in nominating Yvette, Megan, and Natalie and spreading the word to other Harvard alumni asking them to do the same. As a reminder, a nomination is not a commitment to vote, but it helps provide alumni with more options when voting in the spring.

You'll find signinginstructions from Harvard Forward at the bottom of this email, and you can read more about the candidates, platform, and how to sign on the Harvard Forward website:HarvardForward.org.

In advance, thank you for your help.

Timothy E. Wirth ‘61; former Overseer
U.S. Senate, Colorado (Ret.)
President Emeritus, The United Nations Foundation
1750 Pennsylvania Ave NW. Suite 300
Washington, DC. 20006
