Sad News, the Passing of Newell Flather

Dear 1961 Class Members,

Newell (MA Columbia, and MBA Harvard) devoted his early years to the Peace Corps, and later continued his excursions to Ghana, and other African nations, as Chairperson of Oxfam, America.  He also sought solutions for all Southeast Asia.  It was a natural for Newell to evolve to President, Grants Management Association, which offered him the perfect outlet for a lifetime of service.

Kate Cameron and Newell had two happy children, Newell Jr. in 1967, and Alice in 1970.  In recent years, Newell contributed to the comeback of Lowell, MA, and the Mass Historical Society.  He especially cared for this Class of 1961, both its men and women, and sought to leave a permanent “real” tangible gift, from us to Harvard.  He seized the initiative with a tip from his friend Renny Little ’60, and by getting the endorsements of HAA and The Harvard Fund, he succeeded.  He led the effort to first restore and then film the three Pitman Dioramas.

We will miss Newell’s chuckle of laughter, his insight, his courage, and vision.  Bye, Newell, bye for now.

With best regards,
