Gus Schumacher's Passing

Dear Classmates,

Most of you know Gus Schumacher.  He and his wife attended John Reidy’s July Event in Wareham.  I am sad to say, he died of a heart attack on the 25th, about a month after learning that his stepson, Andrew  Karasz, had died in Texas (most likely from a sepsis infection).

Here is a link to a full report Gus Schumacher: Food Farming Hero-1940-2017 on Gus’ many accomplishments.

Gus had farms and farmers’ markets in his blood.  His grandfather managed a farm on Long Island and brought produce to the city every day, in a horse-drawn wagon.  In the 80s and 90s, Gus directed the Massachusetts Department of Food and Agriculture, and served as Undersecretary of the US Department of Agriculture.  We all wish to express our sympathies and condolences to Susan and his stepdaughter, Valerie Karasz.
