Putting the 1961 Class Website in Your Life

PUTTING THE 1961 WEBSITE IN YOUR LIFE

Dear 1961 Classmate:

At the Class Committee Meeting on May 3rd, we agreed to help all Class members simplify their access to the Class website with a desktop shortcut.  You will first need your Harvard Key, which the website will walk you through setting up, if you haven’t already done it.

The new HAA website is an exciting place.  You can check upcoming EVENTS.  You can see photos from recent EVENTS.  AND, there are links to material Harvard is currently publishing for the Harvard Crimson, the Harvard Gazette, upcoming sports events, etc.

So here are some steps you can take:

First, here is a link to the website address for our class http://1961.classes.harvard.edu/.   You can go to the site, then add it to your Bookmarks or Favorites, if you use them.  If you do not use bookmarks, please jump down to the Desktop Shortcut section below.

If you use Firefox, click on the Bookmark tab on the top line of your browser window.  One of the first things on the menu will be “Bookmark this page.”  When you click that, a pop-up will ask you to confirm, and you can change the name of the Bookmark if you like.  Then click OK and the site will be available on your Bookmarks list.

If you use Explorer, click the Favorites tab on the top line of your browser window.  The first option will be “Add to Favorites.”  A window will pop up where you can rename the site if you like.  Then OK and it will be available in your Favorites list.

If you use Chrome, click the Settings (three black lines in top right corner), then go down the menu to click Bookmarks, and then click Bookmark this Page

If you use another browser, there will be similar steps to add the site.

If you would prefer to have a Desktop Icon Shortcut, it is easy to create one.  Here’s how:

  1. First, highlight and copy the website address http://1961.classes.harvard.edu/.   To highlight, pull your cursor all the way across the address until it is completely covered by the colored band.  It should look like this: http://1961.classes.harvard.edu/ (don’t use this one, it’s just a pretty face).  Then right-click it with your mouse and select “copy” from the menu.  Now your computer will remember it.
  2. Next, place your cursor over any empty area on your desktop.  Right-click, and you will see a menu.  Click the option “New,” probably the next to last.  Another menu will pop up.  Click the second option “Shortcut.”
  3. A little Shortcut Wizard will open.  Put your cursor in the empty field under “Type the location of the item,” and right-click.  In the middle of the little menu that will open will be “Paste.”  Click Paste and the website address you copied will pop in.  The next Wizard window will say “Select a Title for the Program” at the top.  In the white field that may say “New Internet Shortcut,” you can type in “1961 Class Website” or “1961” or whatever you would like to name it.  When you have named it (you can always change it later), click Finish at the bottom, and your new Shortcut will appear.  You can drag it (with cursor over the shortcut, hold down the left mouse button and pull across the desktop) to any spot on the desktop you like.

Now, when you want to visit the Harvard website, you can just click your new icon.  Try it now to be sure it works.  If it doesn’t, no problem.  Right-click on it and select “Delete.”  Then go through the steps again.

Now, the link to the public part of your 1961 Class website is in a handy place.  You can bring it up whenever you please and see what’s going on.

If you want to see the private part of the website, you have to register.  This requires you to set up a Harvard Key – your lifetime password.  However, if you are satisfied with the information you have on the public Home Page, you may not feel the need for this additional step.

On the Class website Home Page, the Class Events tab will show you a summary of upcoming and past Events.  Photos of past Class Events, Class Notes, and many other features are available when you have your Harvard Key – your lifetime password to the private sections of the website.  Here’s how you get your password approved.

Getting Your Harvard Key: Use the bookmark or icon you just created or log onto Class Website.  When the Home Page opens, click the Login tab.  This opens Alumni Login.  When you click that, you have the login screen where you can enter your e-mail address and password (Harvard Key).  If you do not yet have your Harvard Key, scroll down to the Claim Your Harvard Key link near the bottom of the page.  This takes you to the Select Your User Type screen.  Under the Alumni tab, it tells you

To claim your Harvard Key, you'll need the following:

  1. Your 10-character Harvard Alumni Association (HAA) number (find this at the bottom of any recent email or mailing from the Alumni Association)
  2. Your last name
  3. Your degree year (holders of multiple Harvard degrees can use the year of any of their degrees)
  4. A personal email address to use for account reminders
  5. If you have any problems along the way, feel free to email ithelp@harvard.edu or call 617-495-7777 for assistance.

Click Continue, and the next screen will have fields to enter this information.  It will then generate a temporary password.  You can log in with that password, and then reset to a password you prefer, with upper and lower case letters and numbers.  Be sure to record your new password somewhere safe, a place you can find easily, so you will be sure to have it for the future.

Hope this is helpful,
